Theresa's portable hdd (which contains ALL of her photos) has quit. It's a 120GIG SATA hdd that's being run via USB. The fan turns on, but the drive won't be recognized by winblows XP or Vista. What can we do about it? |

| How cool is that? |
[Oct. 5th, 2007|09:50 am] |
A couple of weeks ago, I participated in the Queen West Art Crawl in Toronto, in Trinity Bellwoods Park. It wasn't a very successful weekend. In fact, I didn't make enough sales to cover the cost of the travel to Toronto and entry to the show, but... But... There was one thing that happened (that I totally missed out on) that made the weekend completely worth while (besides getting to spend the weekend with my lovely girlfriend).
At the end of Sunday's sales day, I was packing up the van for the drive back to Ottawa and Theresa was guarding all my stuff at the curb. Well, I was going about my merry way packing everything up, when I noticed her having a conversation with two gentlemen on bicycles. I returned to her side just in time to see the cyclists departing, but I thought to myself... Hey, isn't that Jay Ingram from Discovery Channel's "Daily Planet"? (http://www.discoverychannel.ca/content/?pid=183)
Theresa told me a story about how one of my prints (Helix II Redux) was the focus of a discussion that she had had with the cyclists about nautilus shells, the Fibbonacci sequence, and spirals. Of course, this only served to emphasize that the guy I thought was Mr. Ingram probably was, indeed, Mr. Ingram.
I returned to Ottawa, and, because the curiosity was killing me, I fired off an e-mail to Daily Planet (since I couldn't find contact info for Jay Ingram online) just asking if that actually was him, etc. etc. Well, the reply arrived today, and yeah, it was him, so that's kinda cool! My photography has been viewed and appreciated by a relatively famous guy! Awesome! Ahahhahah!
Yeah, I'm a bit of a nerdy lame-o. So what? ;) |

I do the stupidest things anyone could ever think of. Why do I do it? I don't know. Perhaps partially because I'm still trying to self destruct? Who really knows. All I know is that pretty much as soon as I've done it, I feel like hell about it, because it was dumb, and because it hurts people.
Bleah. Suckage. |

cthulhia</lj> So loading the truck by the movers went just fine this morning, and they finished about 12:30 or so. It's now 3:40 pm, and absolutely nothing has come off the truck yet. In fact, we're not even at the new house yet (which is a 30 minute drive from the old house). The movers were bringing the washer and dryer to Theresa's ex husband's house, but as they were pulling into the driveway of his apartment building, the driver jackknifed the truck and severed the pneumatic hose that connected the rear brakes of the trailer to the truck. So, the trailer is sitting on the side of the road with the two workers, while the driver has been gone for over two hours to get the truck repaired so that we can get our stuff into the house... Bleargh. |

| Let's make it official... |

Big changes in my life. BIIIIG changes. Ones that result in more debt than I've ever had before in my life. To the tune of about $180,000. Yes, I bought a house. Theresa and I bought a house. Who's Theresa, you ask? Well... Let me tell you...
Tree is a co-worker of mine. We met through work when she returned from Maternity Leave, and started out as just friends, hanging out, going to movies, you know how it is. Then, friends became a couple. Well, a couple with a husband (separated, divorced before christmas), and three children. Yep, I've got three boys by association now. Caleb, 8, Aidian, 5, and Liam, 2. Let me tell you, they're great, but holy crap, what a lot of energy they take. In fact, I've been going to bed at like, 10 instead of 12 since I moved into Tree's house in Masson (we take possession of the new house on September 21, and move on the 22nd.)
So, I'm moving to the wrong province (where everyone speaks French), but am gaining a 1600 square foot semi-detached and a family. I love it, and couldn't wish for more in my life. I only dread the packing that we're going to have to do on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Woo-Hoo! Sunday will be the day that was worth the effort, when we can sleep in, and then slowly start unpacking and setting up the house.
Look for an invitation to the housewarming party sometime in November, once we're settled in. We'll have a few couches for the out-of towners to crash on, and probably won't have the kids that weekend, so there's going to be plenty of beds, I think... ;)
Am I happy? Hells yeah. Happier than I think I've ever been. Now, if only I could do the photography thing full time and make a career out of it. I'm hoping for a good show at Queen West this weekend for sure.
Speaking of photography, once we get settled into the new house, I've got a new long-term project that I'll be looking at. I'm going to see what I can do about putting together a photo-book where the subject matter is nothing more than the mines, quarries and mineral explorations (abandoned) of Ontario and Quebec. That should be a lot of fun for me. Tree's already said she's not interested. Her loss!
As always, to see what I'm photographing lately, check out my photoblog at http://www.markatos.net, or add markatos to your friends list (it's an rss feed from my site).
To see what Tree's photographing, try this: http://flickr.com/treekins
Now, it's time to do some more work, and then to head out to pick up large prints from the printer, mat board from the art store, and frames from... IKEA!
See you all in Toronto tomorrow, or elsewhere in the future.

| What's Mark doing this weekend? |
[Sep. 13th, 2007|09:52 am] |
Why, I'm in Toronto, of course, for my first art exhibition in the "Big Smoke". I'm one of 250 participants in the Queen West Art Crawl's Outdoor Art Show and Sale, in Trinity Bellwoods Park on Queen West at Strachan. If you're in Toronto, and have a spare hour or two between 11am and 6pm either Saturday the 15th or Sunday the 16th, come see me! My booth is "Orange 2, #20". Basically, that means that if you walk into the park from the main entrance on Queen Street, and cross the circular causeway, and keep going straight, my booth is just past the corner on the left... You'll recognize the location when you get there... Here's a google map of basically my exact location in the park:
http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=n43.64605+w79.4135&ie=UT F8&ll=43.646596,-79.413326&spn=0.003001,0.004989&z=18&iwloc=addr&om=1
I'm showing about 22 pieces, I think but I've got about 50 more in the portfolio books. Come on by and have a look. Theresa and I are staying in a bed and breakfast right near the park, so if you are interested in doing breakfast or dinner or something with us, let me know, and we'll see what we can work out.
Of course, I'm totally not looking forward to the drive back to Masson (my current domicile, a half hour beyond Ottawa in Quebec) on Sunday, since we leave Toronto probably at 7pm, and will arrive home well after midnight, because we have to stop at my parent's place... Bleargh.
Anyways, avail yourself of my artwork, and come buy something, help me pay for the house that Theresa and I just bought (Okay, help me pay for a 10-20mm lense... And maybe even pay for Sony's new Semi-pro DSLR body... Whee!) |

After reading about it on cthulhia's journal, and complaining over the last six months that I was faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat... I jumped in with two feet, and started the Couch to 5K run program. Thank god I've got all that workout clothing left over from last year, when I spent four hundred dollars on a gym membership. Well, okay, half a gym membership, as I shared it with essentiae. Anyways, so I found some great podcasts at http:/podcasts.ullreys.net via http://www.c25k.com. It's a nine week program.
Did my first run today, an interesting, and rather easy interval session of just over thirty minutes with warmup and cooldown.
You can see the route I took (an out-and-back) here: http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/canada/on/ottawa/712853517
I feel good. I feel fat, but I feel good. I am realistically 35 pounds overweight, but I want to lose 45. We'll see how that goes as the days go by
One down, twenty-six to go (three times a week for the next nine weeks.
Cthulhia, I'm on a fifteen minute mile right now, on that interval. Look out, here I come! |

| How Harry Potter Really ends... |
[Jul. 23rd, 2007|12:53 pm] |
Harry, Ron and Hermione enter a diner. They order Butter Beer and onion rings. Voldemort is sitting at the lunch counter, marking time. Outside, Ron's sister, Ginny, is having a hell of a time parallel parking, even though she's using her wand. And just then the door to the diner opens and Harry Potter looks up and-the last 11 pages of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" are freaking blank.

| Rumblings and Grumblings |
[Jun. 26th, 2007|11:01 am] |
1. Going to the Catskills on Saturday, and will be there and in Hudson Valley exploring abandoned Borscht Belt hotels and sanitariums/sanitoriums for nine days. Leaving Ottawa about 7am, June 30, and returning to Ottawa late on July 8. I know Risa and Jody and John aren't around, but is there anyone else out there on my friends list that's interested in getting together?
2. At some point while there, Theresa and I will be heading into Manhattan for a day. Danchek? Leader? Dinner?
3. Received word on Friday evening that my art was juried into the Queen West Art Crawl on September 15 and 16, 2007. I'll be one of 200 exhibitors, and there's expected to be 15000 (yes, fifteen thousand) guests through the gates over the two days. I'll post my exact location in Trinity Bellwoods Park (790 Queen Street West @ Strachan) when I receive my package in the mail (Sometime in August). So, I can now officially say that I've met two of my three art-goals for 2007. Have a show in Ottawa. Check (twice, actually, maybe thrice, we'll see) Have a show in Toronto. Check. Ten thousand dollars in sales. (Getting there...)
4. I'm buying a house. Well, Theresa and I are buying a house. I guess I haven't mentioned much about her here, or about anything here, really... Theresa and I work in the same office. I met her when she returned from Maternity leave for her third kid (all boys). She thought I was gay, because I like to talk about shoes. We hung out, we dated, now we're buying a house, and she's getting a divorce. She was getting a divorce before we met, don't worry, I'm not splitting anything up. So yeah, we're buying a house. We'll be moving to Aylmer, Quebec. We're hoping to move September 1. I've got my fingers crossed that it happens then, anyways. Has to be around then so that the kids can start at their new schools and daycare. Yeah, kids. Three of them. Caleb (8), Aidan (5), and Liam (2). They love me. I tolerate them. No, actually, they're all pretty fun.
5. I think my car is going to blow up. Transmission is fuxored. Engine seems to be struggling at times, and makes much more noise than I'm used to. I just hope it gets us through the next two weeks.
6. Add markatos to your friends list. It's an RSS feed from my photoblog at http://www.markatos.net, which you should also be checking on a fairly regular basis. Seriously. ;)
7. You'll definitely want to check out my photoblog on July 6. That photo might be one of the best, and most emotionally evocative ones that I've taken. At least, that's how I feel about it. ;) |

...and drunk, but whatever.
Congratulations to our Ottawa Senators for all the hard work and effort. Took the conference finals this year, and faced the better team in the Ducks, played as hard as we could, it just wasn't quite enough.
Still, a fantastic effort, and I hold no ill will toward our team. We did well, and I'm proud.
Go Sens Go.
See you next season. |
